Day 8: Lessons from the Laundry

So as I've been fending off whatever germ is trying to get me this week, I've been trying to keep up with the bare minimum. Overall, it's been a successful effort. Today saw several loads of laundry folded and put away. As I was putting away my own portion of the laundry, I realized something: I've been using t-shirts I would normally use for yard work and knit pants that have seen a better day. I am using old clothes that are a whisper away from the trash bin? Really?

Today I learned laundry can tell you a lot about what a person thinks they are worth. I am worth feeling neat, cute and attractive in my sleepwear. Sure, no one else is going to see me in them (I may shop accidentally in my slippers, but never in pajamas!), but I am going to see me in them, as will my husband and kids. What kind of wife and mom image am I giving them by dressing in holey pajamas? I dare say I'm sending the message that the Mrs. and Mommy aren't worth even a $12 set of yoga pants and a $5 knit shirt! Yikes! My future daughters-in-law and son-in-law will surely not thank me for that little gem. It's time to set a better example.

I have Christmas money that I've wondered how to spend. I've got returns to make to a local store - while I'm there this weekend, I think it's high time I gifted myself with some new jammies.

  1. I totally agree!

Just before Christmas, I realised that all my night clothes had holes in them (age and overenthusiastic cats) and were just tatty. No wonder I always felt rubbish in the morning - I would look at myself in the mirror and I would be wearing tat.

So I bought a whole new set of night clothes and binned everything that was old or had holes. I now have beautiful clothes to sleep in.

Since that revelation, I have been feeling better about myself. I've done my hair, my nails are painted and I've been exercising daily when the girls are napping. I've managed to lose 4lbs already and I just feel better about myself.

  2. I think something you said elsewhere on the interwebz must have been rolling around in the back of my mind. As I fold that laundry, I just gasped - it's TRUE! I deserve some cute pajamas. I bet I could even find some very inexpensive ones on clearance... so I'm not saying a gal has to spend ridiculous sums of money.

The other day, Joan and I were talking about quantity vs quality. That comes into play here, too. I'd like to have a couple of nice pj sets... but I certainly don't aspire to be the Imelda Marcos of pajamas. I can only wear one set at a time.

Maybe this is why we always got a new pair of pajamas at Christmas? Hmmm. Something to ponder.

  3. It's true. I didn't spend much at all - less than £50 for a weeks worth of night clothes. I don't have expensive taste - just some vest tops (in built support) and some bottoms. But I took the time to colour co-ordinate everything so it doesn't matter what I grab. It all looks good together.

I definitely make more of an effort now. Why would you go from look respectable in the morning in your night clothes to skanky because your day clothes are also old and manky? I don't have many clothes that fit right now, but I'm currently reluctant to splurge because I don't know what size I'm going to end up and I hope to be pregnant again soon anyway!

  4. We have to start somewhere... that's part of the point of this blog. We don't have to change everything at once. One step at a time. But it's interesting that each step naturally leads us to the next one.

  5. I think that is what we have to focus on. We look to the finishing line of whatever we want to achieve, and it looks so far away and so difficult to get to.

But it is one step at a time.
